Parenthetical Format. Quoted text is placed inside double quotation marks. The citation appears in parentheses outside the quotation and includes the author, date and page number (p. #) separated by commas. If at the end of a sentence a full stop is placed after the citation.
Place direct quotations that are 40 words or longer in a free-standing block of typewritten lines and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, indented 1/2 inch from the left margin, i.e., in the same place you would begin a new paragraph.
Do not add any extra spaces between references. Start the first line of each reference at the left margin; indent each subsequent line five spaces (a hanging indent). TIP: Use MS Word function under the Paragraph tab to create this. Put your list in alphabetical order.
APA Format: Block Quotations (7th Edition) When citing a quotation that is 40 words or longer, the quote should be formatted as a free-standing block without quotation marks. Begin with a signal phrase that introduces the quote, then on a new line with a inch indent from the left, add your quotation.
In MLA format, a quotation of more than four full lines of prose or three lines of verse should be indented inch from the left margin and double-spaced like the rest of the paper. In APA format, a quotation of more than forty words should also be indented half an inch from the left margin.
To cite a direct quote in APA, you must include the authors last name, the year, and a page number, all separated by commas. If the quote appears on a single page, use p.; if it spans a page range, use pp. An APA in-text citation can be parenthetical or narrative.
About Block Quotes Any quotation containing 40 or more words should be formatted as a Block Quote. Do not use quotation marks to enclose block quotations. Place period at the end of the quote rather than after the citation. Block quotes should start on a new line and indent the block about inch from the left margin.
There are three main rules for quoting in APA Style: If the quote is under 40 words, place it in double quotation marks. If the quote is 40 words or more, format it as a block quote. Cite the author, year, and page number with an APA in-text citation.
