Indications. Inlays/onlays are indicated when teeth are weakened and extensively restored. There are no obvious contrast between the two. Inlays are usually indicated when there has been repeated bdocHub in the integrity of a direct filling as metal inlays are more superior in strength.
Inlays are used to fill, cover and patch larger portions of a cavity, hole or gap on the biting surface of a tooth than could be sealed with a filling, and where that cavity, hole or gap is contained within the cusp of your tooth (inside the perimeter as opposed to over the shoulders or cusps of the tooth.
Dental inlays are fitted and molded in the chewing area of your tooth that has been damaged through injury or decay. On the other hand, onlays are used for damage and deterioration to the cusps of your tooth as well as the biting surface.
Usually, when an old filling gets bdocHubed repeatedly, or when other direct restoration methods become quite challenging, an inlay is indicated. While small cavities can be easily addressed with direct composites, a larger cavity within a relatively salvageable tooth can call for a dental inlay.
Basic principles for the formation of cavities for inlays: The cavity is formed considering the route of administration and outputting of the inlay. Prophylactic expansion of the cavity for the prevention of caries recurrence. Ensuring of strength of the walls and the bottom of the cavity to chewing pressure.
Dental onlays repair damage on the cusp the elevated part of the tooth surface. These are made from a porcelain or gold material, and they cover only the damaged part of the tooth. If you have a severely damaged or decayed tooth, you may need a dental crown that fits completely over the tooth.
An inlay will incorporate the pits and fissures of a tooth, mainly encompassing the chewing surface between the cusps. An onlay will involve one or more cusps being covered. If all cusps and the entire surface of the tooth is covered this is then known as a crown.
The inlay/onlay requires a minimum of 1.5 mm occlusal space and all cuspidian angles must be rounded and the margins must have a shoulder shape with a rounded internal angle or a wide chamfer. The preparations should have a minimum ceramic thickness of approximately 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm.
