Direct ACL insertion is located anteriorly, on the medial surface of the lateral femoral condyle. It is connected to a bone depression parallel and immediately posterior to the intercondylar lateral ridge and to the medial surface of the lateral femoral condyle.
They work together to keep the shinbone attached to the thighbone. The ACL connects the front of the shinbone to the back of the thighbone so the shin does not slide in front of the thigh. The PCL connects the back of the shinbone to the front of the thighbone so the shin does not slide behind the thigh.
The PCL helps keep your leg bones in place and allows your knee to move back and forth.
The ACL footprint is positioned at the space formed by the residents ridge, the cartilage margin of the lateral femoral condyle, and Blumensaats line. The center of this footprint could serve as a reference point for femoral tunnel formation during anatomical single-bundle ACLR.
This ligament prevents the tibia from moving too much and going behind the femur. A PCL injury (which may also be called hyperextended knee) is a partial or complete tearing or stretching of any part of the posterior cruciate ligament. The PCL is usually injured by overextending the knee (hyperextension).
The posterior cruciate ligament, located in the back of the knee, is one of several ligaments that connect the femur to the tibia. The posterior cruciate ligament keeps the shinbone from moving backward too far. It is stronger than the anterior cruciate ligament and is injured far less often.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) consists of two major fiber bundles, namely the anteromedial and posterolateral bundle. When the knee is extended, the posterolateral bundle (PL) is tight and the anteromedial (AM) bundle is moderately lax.
The PCL functions as one of the main stabilizers of the knee joint and serves primarily to resist excessive posterior translation of the tibia relative to the femur. The PCL also acts as a secondary stabilizer of the knee preventing excessive rotation specifically between 90 and 120 of knee flexion.
