You should prefer an onlay because onlays allow the majority of your tooth to stay in place. Inlays come up against fillings but offer a better and more long-term approach because they cover a larger area more easily.
With a filling, an amalgam or composite material is used to fill the space, and it's a much quicker process, involving only a single visit. With an inlay, the space is filled with a single, solid piece that is usually fabricated in a lab and they are typically made out of a material like gold or ceramic.
The primary distinction between an onlay and an inlay is that an onlay will cover a cusp of the tooth, whereas an inlay only fills the area between the cusps. The cavity is still drilled from the tooth, and an onlay is fabricated to the exact size and shape of the space.
Inlay procedure involves placing a custom-made insert in the selected area of the tooth to restore it. The method helps in stabilizing the affected tooth and in preventing further decay. During the procedure, the affected area of the denticle is cleaned; a scan of the tooth is taken for creating the exact-fit filling.
Similar to fillings, inlays and onlays are used to restore a tooth's integrity and function following damage. The difference being that, whereas a standard filling is applied directly into/onto your tooth and hardens in your mouth, inlays and onlays are custom-made in the laboratory and then cemented in place.
Inlay is used when the cavity is too large for simple filling. Inlay is created as a single solid piece to fill the cavity. It is cemented on tooth.
An inlay refers to a filling that usually consists of gold, porcelain, or resin that is used to treat a cavity. An inlay is larger than a filling while being smaller than a crown. The difference between an inlay and a filling is that an inlay lies within the cusps on the chewing portion of the tooth.
What are Dental Inlays? A dental inlay is an indirectly fabricated restoration to repair decayed or chipped teeth. The term "indirect fabrication" refers to preparing a tooth for an inlay in which we create the impression of the tooth to develop exact placement and measurements.
The materials that are most often used for a dental inlay are ceramic, composite resin, metal alloy, and gold alloy.
How long do Inlays/Onlays last? Inlays and onlays are regarded as a long-term solution for restoring your teeth. In general, they would be expected to last a similar number of years to crowns (around 10-15 years) and considerably longer than conventional fillings – provided you have good oral hygiene.
