The inlay/onlay requires a minimum of 1.5 mm occlusal space and all cuspidian angles must be rounded and the margins must have a shoulder shape with a rounded internal angle or a wide chamfer. The preparations should have a minimum ceramic thickness of approximately 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm.
An overlay not only fills a cavity, but it also covers a docHub portion of the biting surface. Overlays cover one or two of the cusps that frame the edges of a molar. Dentists overlays with the same procedure they use to inlays.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
With proper care, your dental inlay or onlay can last up to 15 years or more.
While ADA codes for crowns include separate listings depending on what type of metal or material is used, no distinction is made for the type of metal used in the following inlay codes: 02510-Inlay, metallic, one surface; 02520-Inlay, metallic, two surfaces; 02530-Inlay, metallic, three or more surfaces; 02543-Onlay,
Inlays and onlays are used when the tooth structure is not sufficient enough to place a regular filling and the result is much stronger. The difference between inlays and onlays is that an inlay is placed inside a cavity on your tooth whilst an onlay replaces the cusp(s) (tips) of your tooth.
An inlay is used when there is no damage to the cusp of the tooth, and the inlay can simply be placed right on the tooth. An overlay is used when the damage is a little more extensive. First, the decay will be removed from the tooth and a mold will be taken of the area and sent to a dental lab.
Onlays are sometimes called partial crowns. Overlays extends outwards from onlays. Inlays, onlays and overlays are normally done to repair damaged portion of teeth that may be too large to be fixed with composite resin fillings whilst the damage is not overly extensive requiring a dental crown.
