One of the most well-known types of drawings to come out of ancient Egypt was hieroglyphics. Existing as a form of pictorial writing and drawing, hieroglyphics had an inherent sense of aesthetic beauty. These symbols were typically used on ancient Egyptian monuments as a way to describe what the artwork meant.
inlay, in the visual arts, any decorative technique used to create an ornamental design, pattern, or scene by inserting or setting into a shallow or depressed ground or surface a material of a different colour or type. Inlay techniques are used in enamelwork, furniture decoration, lacquerwork, and metalwork.
Everyone wore jewellery in ancient Egypt, from poor farmers to wealthy royals. For the wealthy, pieces were made from semi-precious stones, precious metals and glass beads. The poor substituted these with painted clay, stones, shells, animal teeth and bones.
You may have seen some of the images of people from ancient Egypt wearing the same kind of necklace in different colors. Its called a wesekh or a broad-collar and the shape is based on a very ancient necklace that would have been made out of flowers.
Egyptian inlay It is a piece of wood with a basketweave carved into it and then triangles of faience glued into a recess. The triangles are pieced together in a parquetry pattern. Voila! Early marquetry. Woodworking in ancient Egypt must have been extremely laborious as there were no iron tools.
What Is a Wood Inlay? Creating a wood inlay involves cutting a recess on the face of a wood base, filling it with new material, then finishing the surface so the final product is smooth and even. Note that inlay can refer to the finished product or the inserted material.
Different types of Inlays and Onlays There are two types of inlays and onlays: direct and indirect. Direct inlays and onlays are made by the dentist within the setting of a dental office. This is an easy process for the patient to partake in, as the inlays and onlays are placed in one visit.
Perhaps the most popular choice for a dental inlay material is porcelain. It is strong and can withstand years of wear and tear. It also improves the bite force of the tooth. Most appealing to patients is that it is the same color as the affected tooth and surrounding teeth.
Inlay in wood In a wood matrix, inlays commonly use wood veneers, but other materials like shells, mother-of-pearl, horn or ivory may also be used. Pietre dure, or coloured stones inlaid in white or black marbles, and inlays of precious metals in a base metal matrix are other forms of inlay.
