- [Voiceover] Marquetry, or wood mosaics, are made by arranging hundreds of small separately cut pieces of wood into an intricate design. The process for making marquetry began when I craftsman drew, or more often traced, a design on paper. This drawing was then secured to a sheet of heavy brown paper. Following the lines of the drawing, the craftsman perforated the pattern. Although now made with a device similar to a sewing machine, during the 18th century, thousands of holes had to be laboriously punched by hand with a needle. This heavy sheet, called the pounce pattern, was laid on top of a sheet of white paper. The craftsman then rubbed graphite over the surface of the perforated pattern to transfer the design to the bottom sheet. The design could be reproduced several times using this method. The wood was then sliced into thin sheets called veneers. In the 1700s, skilled artisans using a cumbersome hand-held saw, could cut veneer as thin as one millimeter. Elaborate marquetry de

Inlay in wood In a wood matrix, inlays commonly use wood veneers, but other materials like shells, mother-of-pearl, horn or ivory may also be used. Pietre dure, or coloured stones inlaid in white or black marbles, and inlays of precious metals in a base metal matrix are other forms of inlay.
Different types of Inlays and Onlays There are two types of inlays and onlays: direct and indirect. Direct inlays and onlays are made by the dentist within the setting of a dental office. This is an easy process for the patient to partake in, as the inlays and onlays are placed in one visit.
With a filling, an amalgam or composite material is used to fill the space, and its a much quicker process, involving only a single visit. With an inlay, the space is filled with a single, solid piece that is usually fabricated in a lab and they are typically made out of a material like gold or ceramic.
An inlay refers to a filling that usually consists of gold, porcelain, or resin that is used to treat a cavity. An inlay is larger than a filling while being smaller than a crown. The difference between an inlay and a filling is that an inlay lies within the cusps on the chewing portion of the tooth.
The inlay is a pre-molded piece of material that bonds to the tooth. The general dentist will use cement to place the inlay into the grooves of the affected tooth. A technician makes the inlay to be the right size and shape of the cavity or the missing portion of the tooth.
Inlays and onlays are made out of gold or porcelain (ceramic). Gold inlays and onlays provide the strongest material that is the most resistant to damage or replacement. Due to this strength, it also only needs a thin layer, which means the majority of your natural tooth structure is preserved.
Marquetry (also spelled as marqueterie; from the French marqueter, to variegate) is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs.
Clad metal inlays are created when a strip of one metal is bonded into a groove in another different metal or substrate. In this way, materials such as bronze, nickel, copper, carbon steel, precious metals and stainless steel inlay strips can be located precisely where they are needed in a base metal.
