The need for the dental inlay class = bullet-list Extensive damage that might require a large dental filling, which might not be strong enough to support the tooths structure. Fracture, breakage, or decay that does not affect the tooths cusps.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
However, veneers are not for restoring teeth functionality but rather for aesthetics. A dentist will recommend dental veneers to restore teeth color, size, shape, and alignment. Besides, dental veneers solely restore the front surfaces of teeth, while onlays and inlays restore the chewing surfaces.
Direct inlays and onlays are made in your dentists office and are usually fitted in a single appointment. Indirect inlays and onlays are made in a laboratory setting. On the first day of the procedure, the dentist takes an impression of the tooth and sends it to a laboratory to create the permanent inlay or onlay.
Inlays are usually needed when the cavity inside the tooth is too large and too deep. Unlike a filling that uses a composite material to fill the space and only takes one visit, with an inlay, a solid piece of material (e.g. porcelain, ceramic, or gold) is made in a laboratory to precisely fit inside the empty space.
An inlay refers to a filling that usually consists of gold, porcelain, or resin that is used to treat a cavity. An inlay is larger than a filling while being smaller than a crown. The difference between an inlay and a filling is that an inlay lies within the cusps on the chewing portion of the tooth.
Both are dental restorations that are color-matched with the patients real teeth. A veneer is a tooth-shaped shell that is cemented to the front part of a tooth, while onlays are partial crowns that are used to protect severely-damaged teeth and restore their function.
