Fret markers are fretboard inlays that are functional as well as decorative; they mark off specific frets in order to visually indicate neck position to the performer. On guitars and basses, fret markers are usually found on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 15th, 17th, and 19th fret.
They dont just pop out. As you are going to something bigger your just gonna cut thru the old ones so the new ones fit. If you want to remove inlays, heat them with a soldering iron until the glue melts, then they should pop out.
Not for me. I usually play standing up and I rarely see the dots on the fretboard with the angle the guitar has. I have one guitar without inlays and I had the same worry while I was planning it (parts guitar), then when I started playing it I forgot the inlay thing for days.

They are simplu references. Most guitars have a dot at frets: 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, and 21. They are essentially a quick visual guide so you dont have to count frets, and its just an easy shorthand.
Smaller dots are also usually inlaid into the upper edge of the fretboard or the neck to be more visible to the player who views the instrument from the side.
Step 1: The first step is to measure the inlay and carefully map out where it will be on the fretboard. Step 2: Following that, you can lightly glue the inlay down on the fingerboard within your measured lines. Step 3: From there, take a sharp razor and score/cut around the outside of the inlay.
