Alameda Research played a docHub role in the growth of FTX, as it acted as FTXs main market maker. As a market maker, Alameda Research was available to buy and sell if other customers wanted to, sometimes taking the losing side of a trade to attract customers to the exchange.
For example, FTX.us requires 10% initial margin to enter a margin trade. However, FTX.us will liquidate the margin and close the trade if the margin value falls to 5% of the trade. The latter is called a maintenance margin, which is usually set at 50% of the initial margin.
FTX margin trading lets you buy and sell FTT using funds that could exceed the balance of your account. Unlike futures and derivatives trading, spot FTX margin trading involves buying or selling the actual underlying assets, rather than financial contracts.
Alamedas trades were often leveraged by loans from cryptocurrency lenders. Over time, it became more difficult for Alameda to get loans due to competition and fewer arbitrage opportunities. In 2019, Bankman-Fried founded FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange, to bring in revenue to support Alameda.

Much of the $5 billion-plus that FTX invested in tech companies was financed through misappropriated customer funds, ing to lawsuits filed against senior executives.
Ellison testified that Alameda ultimately took around $14 billion from FTX customers.
FTX extended loans to Alameda using money that customers had deposited on the exchange for trading purposes, a decision that Mr. Bankman-Fried described as a poor judgment call, one of the people said.
