ArtCenter grad Lindon Leader is the designer behind the legendary FedEx logo with the secret arrow. He designed it in 1994 while working in the San Francisco office of Landor Associates as senior design director.
The typeface used in the FedEx logo is a combination of two fonts Universe 67 and Futura Bold. Leader customized these fonts in such a way that the space between them created the iconic arrow symbol.
Purple reign: As it has since 1994, the FedEx logo has always had a purple Fed and an orange Ex. But in the late 1990s, it began varying the color of the Ex to signify different divisions, with orange remaining for FedEx Express, but using green for FedEx Ground, red for FedEx Freight, yellow for FedEx Trade
The spoon you are referring to, is actually a stylistic element born out of the negative space within the E of Ex. While not an intentional symbol like the arrow, this space can be suggestive of a forward-docHubing arm, embossed within the confines of the E.
At first glance, it is a combination of the five stylized letters that shape a beautiful, clear logotype. Nevertheless, it is not everything. If you take a closer look, youll see that the blank white space between the letter E and letter x creates an arrow that might be unnoticeable for many of us.
You might have noticed that the Ex part of the name changes its color across different displays. Its a witty way to distinguish the departments inside the company. For example, orange stands for FedEx Express, green is the corporate color of FedEx Ground, and red is a direct indication at FedEx Freight.
The hidden arrow in the FedEx logo is one of the most iconic and recognizable elements of the design. The arrow is created by the negative space between the E and the x, and it symbolizes the companys speed and efficiency in delivering packages.
The FedEx logo makes clever use of figure-ground ambiguity to create an invisible arrow in the background space between E and x. Most designers believe the hidden arrow can convey an unconscious impression of speed and precision about the FedEx brand, which may influence subsequent behavior.
