Marquetry is a decorative technique where wood veneers are sawn into a pattern and then assembled like a jigsaw. Inlay is similar but instead of assembling a large panel of veneer, the decoration is inset into a recess cut into a larger panel of wood.
Architecture. A shaped piece of one material embedded in another as part of surface ornamentation. Furniture. A technique in which a design is cut out of the surface to be decorated and filled in with other contrasting materials cut to fit exactly into these openings.
Inlay is commonly used in the production of decorative furniture, where pieces of colored wood, precious metals or even diamonds are inserted into the surface of the carcass using various matrices including clear coats and varnishes.
Wood inlays for furniture are usually made with solid wood. What types of wood? Some Amish furniture pieces include wood inlays made with brown maple, walnut, cherry, ebony or pau amarilla wood. There are also some pieces where aluminum is added for a lovely effect.
