Recessed downlights must be IC-rated if they are to be installed in insulation. If a downlight is not rated for use in insulation, it can create a fire hazard by igniting the insulation. Similarly, track lighting must also be IC-rated if it is to be installed in insulation.
The acronym IC stands for Insulation Contact. An IC rating, as a result, is essentially a measurement to determine if a downlight is suitable and safe to come in contact with insulation or not. A layer of insulation in the ceilings and walls protects most homes these days.
Recessed lights must be IC-rated, but normal hanging light fixtures arent IC-rated because they dont make direct contact with insulation. As you plan your upcoming lighting projects, just remember that your recessed lighting will require an IC rating, while surface-mounted lights wont.
non-IC rated fixtures are compatible with higher-wattage bulbs, but they also have the highest fire risk when paired with the wrong insulation. If you opt to use non-IC-rated fixtures with insulation, there should be at least three inches of space between the fixture and the insulation.
The choice is yours, but we would always recommend using fire-rated downlights where there is living accommodation above. Your local council will be bale to advise you of this too.
A common mistake is using recessed lighting that produces too much heat for the amount of space left between the dropped ceiling and the original. When installing these devices, ensure an electrician verifies there is enough ventilation and room between objects that excess heat wont make the area a fire hazard.
If you dont have access to the attic space where the lights are located, such as in vaulted ceilings, you can take the light bulb out and look inside the fixture. The inside of the housing on non-IC rated lights will usually be white just like the outside as opposed to silver on the IC rated lights.
Non IC rated fixtures usually have a white housing and light can be seen shining through vent holes in the housing, whereas IC rated fixtures have a silver outer housing and no gaps for light to shine through. Non IC rated light fixtures can be installed in areas where insulation is present.
