Creating a wood inlay involves cutting a recess on the face of a wood base, filling it with new material, then finishing the surface so the final product is smooth and even.
A polyurethane-based adhesive like Gorilla Glue or Gorilla Wood Glue is ideal for gluing metal to wood. Wood can be a tricky surface to glue to metal because the two are so different in density and porosity. However, the strength and flexibility of polyurethane-based glues are more than up for the challenge.
An onlay is an indirect restoration covering one or more cusps of a posterior tooth. It is designed to strengthen a tooth that has been weakened by caries, tooth fracture, or a previously placed large restoration. Resin, cast gold, or ceramic may be used.
Start by lightly scoring the wood to get a groove going. Once the groove is established, you can cut further down with less risk of your knife slipping along the wood grain. Only cut into the wood just deep enough to fit the entire inlaid piece. If you end up slightly shallow, you can sand the inlaid piece down.
To put it simply, wood inlays are created by carving a void into the surface of a piece of wood, then filling that void with a piece of contrasting wood or other material cut to the same dimensions.
Inlay is an artistic technique commonly represented in furniture, decorative arts, and even musical instruments. To achieve a collage-like image on a flat surface, the craftsman cuts into the surface of wood or stone and inserts stone, metal, resin, wood, or other precious materials into the cut-out space.
