Go to Insert Header or Footer. Choose from a list of standard headers or footers, go to the list of Header or Footer options, and select the header or footer that you want. Or, create your own header or footer by selecting Edit Header or Edit Footer.
What to Know Double-click the top or bottom margin of a section. Anything added to the field appears as a header or footer on subsequent pages. For advanced settings, select Insert. In Header and Footer, choose the Header or Footer drop-down menu and select your options. Headers and footers can be applied per section.
In the Field names list, click on StyleRef. In the Style name list, click on Heading 1. Select the Preserve formatting during updates checkbox. To insert the chapter name, leave all other check boxes cleared. To insert the chapter number instead, select the Insert paragraph number check box. Click OK.
Go to References Captions Cross-reference. Select Heading from the menu as your reference type. Pick the relevant chapter title and click Insert.

Insert a header or footer Go to Insert Header or Footer. Choose the header style you want to use. Add or change text for the header or footer. To eliminate a header--like deleting it on the title page--select it and then check the Different First Page box. Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.
The chapter title should be centered halfway or one-third of the way down the page. For the first chapter, write Chapter One (or Chapter 1) and write the chapter title below. Continue this chapter headings format for each subsequent chapter number. New chapters should start on a blank page.
