An inlay covers a small area of the chewing surface that does not involve the tooth cusps (raised edges of the tooth).
verb (used with object) to decorate (an object) with layers of fine materials set in its surface: to inlay a chest with lighter wood. to insert or apply (layers of fine materials) in the surface of an object: to inlay marble in a tabletop.
Inlays and Onlays are similar as they are a type of indirect restoration. However, the difference is that Inlays are indirect restorations which do not have cuspal coverage and are within the body of the tooth. (1) Onlays are indirect restorations that cover both body and cusps of teeth.
Dental inlays are fitted and molded in the chewing area of your tooth that has been damaged through injury or decay. On the other hand, onlays are used for damage and deterioration to the cusps of your tooth as well as the biting surface.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
inlay, in the visual arts, any decorative technique used to create an ornamental design, pattern, or scene by inserting or setting into a shallow or depressed ground or surface a material of a different colour or type. Inlay techniques are used in enamelwork, furniture decoration, lacquerwork, and metalwork.
As in the name implies, an inlay fills the center of the tooth between the cusps, which are sides or raised parts of your tooth. An onlay will cover a larger part of the tooth and will include the cusp, typically used to repair a chipped tooth or fracture.
An inlay refers to a filling that usually consists of gold, porcelain, or resin that is used to treat a cavity. An inlay is larger than a filling while being smaller than a crown. The difference between an inlay and a filling is that an inlay lies within the cusps on the chewing portion of the tooth.
