Types of Framing. In general, there are four different types of elements you can use to create a frame within your shot and draw the viewers attention: architectural, natural, geometric shapes, and light/shadow.
Liners are fabric-covered moulding, used inside the outer moulding in a frame design. A liner is not completely finished, so it is not used to replace the frame, but to complement it. Liners often are used in place of mats on framed canvas prints or oil paintings that do not require glass or acrylic glazing.
Liners are made of linen stretched over a wooden frame and attached to the inside of your frame. Your artwork will sit inside the linen liner. Genuine linen over natural wood makes for an elegant, upscale presentation. Linen liners add depth and, like mats, soften the transition from image to frame.
You might not know how to make a picture frame, but its easier than you think. All you need is a couple framing studsyou might even be able to use leftovers from a past projectand a few basic power tools. This guide will walk you through how to make a picture frame you can customize to suit your decor and style.

Liners are used to give visual space and dimension around the artwork and are placed between your art and the frame. Historically they have been used for art where glass is not used, such as oil or acrylic paintings.
The four most important framing components are the moulding (material the frame is made of), the matboard, the glaze and backing. The moulding is purely aesthetic whereas the glaze, matboard and backing serve a critical function in conservation.
The Inlay Bone Frame is a unique mix of materials, blending a bone trim with engineered wood accents.
Inset Frames are designed to house artwork that has been painted on to board. Normally the artwork is finished in oil or acrylic and painted directly on a 3mm(approx) artist board. When framed, the edges of the artist board will be visible so none of the artwork is hidden behind a rebate or mount.
They serve to add depth and texture to the framed item. However, liners are more commonly used in fabric art and paintings while mats are more commonly used for framing photographs. However, the difference is that the matting is placed over the photograph while with a liner, the artwork sits inside it.
