A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
Inlays and onlays made of porcelain and composite materials can increase tooth strength up to 75% and last between ten and thirty years.
Usually, inlays and onlays are used to restore the back teeth as these are the teeth that do the most work, are the hardest to clean and often suffer the most from decay. Sometimes, they are also used to replace older amalgam fillings.
Anesthetic complications. Allergic reactions to an inlay or onlay, which may be caused by the type of inlay or onlay material used. Ill-fitted and damaged inlays or onlays can cause or worsen tooth decay. Severe mouth pain.
At the second visit, your permanent inlay/onlay will be attached to your tooth with either a resin that hardens when exposed to a special light source, or a type of permanent cement. Inlays and onlays are strong, long-lasting, and require no greater level of care than any other tooth.
Fallen inlay / onlay over time, particularly with patients with poor oral hygiene habits, leakage can occur along the margin of the prepared natural tooth and the inlay / onlay. This leakage allows bacteria to seep in, causing decay. When this decay becomes extensive enough, the inlay / onlay is prone to falling out.
Inlays are applied to the grooves (also known as pits and fissures) of the tooth, and they extend deep into the tooths roots. They usually last anywhere between five and 20 years. Although there is no assurance that they will last this long, it is possible to make them last.
Inlays are a type of indirect restoration (filling) that is used to restore extensively damaged or decayed teeth.
