Inlays are applied to the grooves (also known as pits and fissures) of the tooth, and they extend deep into the tooths roots. They usually last anywhere between five and 20 years. Although there is no assurance that they will last this long, it is possible to make them last.
While ADA codes for crowns include separate listings depending on what type of metal or material is used, no distinction is made for the type of metal used in the following inlay codes: 02510-Inlay, metallic, one surface; 02520-Inlay, metallic, two surfaces; 02530-Inlay, metallic, three or more surfaces; 02543-Onlay,
Inlays come up against fillings but offer a better and more long-term approach because they cover a larger area more easily. Inlays help to strengthen the tooth, whereas fillings can sometimes weaken it when the filling material expands.
Gold inlays tend to average between $800 and $1,000, while porcelain inalys typically range from $900 to $1,200 per tooth.
Inlays and onlays are currently reported using codes D2510 to D2664. Crowns are reported using codes D2390 and D2710 to D2799, including those made with indirect composite.
Treatment cost generally ranges from $650 to $1,200 per tooth, with an average price of $900. Most insurance plans cover some or all of the costs associated with inlay and onlay procedures since these treatments are designed to restore damaged teeth to health.
Anesthetic complications. Allergic reactions to an inlay or onlay, which may be caused by the type of inlay or onlay material used. Ill-fitted and damaged inlays or onlays can cause or worsen tooth decay. Severe mouth pain.
