Inlays are frequently used to treat large cavities that are located in the area between the tooths cusps. Onlays can also be used to treat decay, but they have other common applications as well. They are often used to repair teeth whose cusps have been damaged by excessive wear or acid erosion.
The Dental Onlay Procedure After your tooth is numb, theyll remove the decayed or damaged portion to prepare your tooth for the onlay. At this time, theyll take an impression of your tooth to send out to a laboratory to create the permanent restoration.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
An onlay is much stronger than any other type of filling and actually increases the strength of the tooth.
Dental inlays are fitted and molded in the chewing area of your tooth that has been damaged through injury or decay. On the other hand, onlays are used for damage and deterioration to the cusps of your tooth as well as the biting surface.
Preparation of inlays are with close to parallel walls and a key on the occlusal surface- this is sometimes sufficient for retention purposes so adhesive resin luting cements may not be needed. Ceramic inlays can also be cured with chemically cured resin composite or dual cured resin composite.
Inlays are usually indicated when there has been repeated bdocHub in the integrity of a direct filling as metal inlays are more superior in strength. It is also indicated when placement of direct restoration may be challenging to achieve satisfactory parameters (shape, margin, occlusion).
The inlay/onlay requires a minimum of 1.5 mm occlusal space and all cuspidian angles must be rounded and the margins must have a shoulder shape with a rounded internal angle or a wide chamfer. The preparations should have a minimum ceramic thickness of approximately 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm.
