Summary. In terms of natural-looking aesthetics, porcelain and zirconia are the best, followed by composite inlays and onlays. On the other hand, gold is the most superior in terms of strength and durability, followed by zirconia, porcelain, and composite.
It is made from various materials, including metal, ceramics, or porcelain, and is fabricated in a laboratory before being permanently placed on the tooth.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
Inlays/onlays are made of high-strength porcelain or gold. These restorations are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. An inlay (which is similar to a filling) is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth.
Inlays are used to fill, cover and patch larger portions of a cavity, hole or gap on the biting surface of a tooth than could be sealed with a filling, and where that cavity, hole or gap is contained within the cusp of your tooth (inside the perimeter as opposed to over the shoulders or cusps of the tooth.
Inlays are usually indicated when there has been repeated bdocHub in the integrity of a direct filling as metal inlays are more superior in strength. It is also indicated when placement of direct restoration may be challenging to achieve satisfactory parameters (shape, margin, occlusion).
Inlays and onlays can be made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin. These pieces are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. An inlay, which is similar to a dental filling is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth.
Historically inlays and onlays will have been made from gold and this material is still commonly used today. Alternative materials such as porcelain were first described being used for inlays back in 1857. Due to its tooth like colour, porcelain provides better aesthetic value for the patient.
Inlays are applied to the grooves (also known as pits and fissures) of the tooth, and they extend deep into the tooths roots. They usually last anywhere between five and 20 years. Although there is no assurance that they will last this long, it is possible to make them last.
Private treatment for inlays, onlays and overlays varies greatly between different dentists and different regions. In London expect to pay upwards of 600 for inlays/onlays. Outside of London and the bigger cities it may be possible to find dentists charging 400-450.
