ACL surgery involves reconstructing the ligament. Surgeons use screws to attach the reconstructed ligament to the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone). A person may experience pain after surgery due to the placement of these screws. Pain may also be a sign of ACL surgery failure.
LARS acts as a supporting band within the knee to promote healing of the ruptured ACL. It can either be implanted alone or in combination with suturing to the remnant of the injured ligament for reconstruction. LARS is usually indicated in acute injuries, in people with a good ACL stump that has a rich blood supply.
Patellar tendon autograft After removing the torn ACL, the surgeon drills two holes above and below your knee creating a tunnel to insert the graft. Then, they seal the tunnel up with the bone plugs, securing them with screws. Over time, the plugs will fuse with the surrounding bone.
The recovery after an ACL reconstruction is probably the most difficult part of the whole process. After a week or two, most athletes and patients are walking on the leg with no pain and near full range of motion.
The new ACL is harvested from the patellar tendon that connects the bottom of the kneecap (patella) to the top of the shinbone (tibia). The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make two small cuts about inch around your knee.
The surgical procedure is most commonly performed using arthroscopic techniques. Using one or two small incisions on the knee, the graft is taken from the patellar tendon or hamstring tendons, and a tunnel is drilled into both the tibia and femur.
There are different techniques that can be used during an ACL reconstruction surgery. The ACL two-incision technique is a time-tested method for creating accurate anatomically positioned ACL sockets. However, patients prefer smaller incisions.
The anterior cruciate ligament originates at the medial wall of the lateral femoral condyle and inserts into the middle of the intercondylar area.
