What is the charging effect in XPS?

Charging Effects in X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy When X-ray photons strike a surface, they cause the emission of electrons. This, of course, is the basis of the XPS technique. If the surface is electrically insulating, then the emission of electrons causes a positive charge to accumulate at the surface.

What is the charging effect?

Charging effect frequently occurs when characterizing nonconductive materials using electrons as probes and/or signals and can impede the acquisition of useful information about the material under investigation.

What is the XPS technique?

XPS is a surface-sensitive quantitative spectroscopic technique that measures the elemental composition at the parts per thousand range, chemical state and electronic state of the elements that exist within a material. From: Composites Part B: Engineering, 2016.

What is the chemical shift in XPS?

Chemical shift arises in the initial state from the displacement of the electronic charge from the atom towards its ligands, reducing the electrostatic potential at the atom. There is a final state shift due to the polarization of the ligand by the core on the central atom.

What causes chemical shift in XPS?

This chemical shift is dependent on the electronegativity (electron withdrawing power) of atoms bonded to carbon. Oxygen having more electron withdrawing power than carbon or hydrogen results in an increase in the C-O binding energy relative to C-C. Multiple bonds to electronegative atoms as in O-C=O.

What are the factors affecting binding energy in XPS?

Chemical shifts in XPS spectra are observed when an element enters a different bound state, which results in changes in the binding energy of core electrons. In general, increased oxidation state (removal of valence electrons) increases the Binding Energy and addition of valence electrons decreases the Binding Energy.

What is the photoelectric effect in XPS?

XPS physics - the photoelectric effect. can be thought of as an adjustable instrumental correction factor that accounts for the few eV of kinetic energy given up by the photoelectron as it gets emitted from the bulk and absorbed by the detector. It is a constant that rarely needs to be adjusted in practice.
