Because of their large size, TIFF files usually arent used for everyday marketing content. While a TIFF file might be the original creative file, it will likely be converted to another format to be used in slide decks, websites, and other marketing materials. Avoid TIFF files for: Web graphics.
The most recent version of TIFF is 6.0, published in 1992. Since TIFF images conforming to earlier versions are valid TIFF 6.0 files, the information in this description is also pertinent to earlier versions of the TIFF standard.
Another difference is that TIFF files support layers, whereas JPEG files do not. This means that you can edit a TIFF file and change the order of the layers, whereas with a JPEG file you can only edit the image as a whole.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) files are common in publishing, photo editing, and graphic design.
A TIFF file is a great choice when high quality is your goal, especially when it comes to printing photos or even billboards. TIFF is also an adaptable format that can support both lossy and lossless compression. This allows each page in a TIFF file to be compressed differently if desired.
Disadvantages of TIFF files. They can take up valuable space on your drive. Their size makes them difficult to share or send to contacts or clients. Their high quality makes them a poor choice for website design, since detailed images can slow a websites loading speed.
Tiffs have 99% of the functionality of psd files and they are not proprietary. I use tiffs as my default file format for images that require manipulation in Photoshop; they are my master files. The only time I dont use tiff is when psb is necessary due to file size. (4+ GB files are not uncommon).
A TIFF will enable you to store richer, more detailed images. Its good practice to save your original (or source) photos as TIFF files. JPEGs, meanwhile, might be a better choice for exporting your finished edits because theyre easier to share and print.
