Some players observe that there is a feel difference with a zero fret some like it, some prefer a traditional nut. This all adds up to a zero fret being different than traditional nut; whether its better or worse depends on the player and the guitar. Try them both, and play what feels best to you!
The zero fret, however, is still in contact with the strings while tuning so it gets more of a filing action and can develop creases which are in turn bad for string life.
Zero frets does not need to be higher than the other frets.
If you want to remove inlays, heat them with a soldering iron until the glue melts, then they should pop out. Youre almost guaranteed to damage the inlays, but the board will remain intact. Obviously, only do this if you can route for and the new inlays, then re-radius your fingerboard.

Why are there 2 dots on the 12th fret? Because the notes on the 12th fret are one octave above the open strings and that makes it doubly docHub to mark that fret out.
The 12th fret and 24th frets of a guitar are octaves of the open string youre playing on. For this reason, having two dots on these particular frets makes for an easy reference point. For example, the 12th fret on an E string is also E. After that, the cycle of notes repeats itself.
Fret markers are fretboard inlays that are functional as well as decorative; they mark off specific frets in order to visually indicate neck position to the performer. On guitars and basses, fret markers are usually found on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 15th, 17th, and 19th fret.
The dots you see on a guitar fretboard are to help the guitarist easily find any position on the fretboard. The dots are a quick visual guide to make it easier for guitarists to jump to any fret position.
