inlay, in the visual arts, any decorative technique used to create an ornamental design, pattern, or scene by inserting or setting into a shallow or depressed ground or surface a material of a different colour or type. Inlay techniques are used in enamelwork, furniture decoration, lacquerwork, and metalwork.
The metal inlay was used by the Chinese from early 4th century BC. They used to decorate vessels with precious metals like gold and silver. Metal chips were used in cabinet making in France from the 17th century. The stone inlays were used in decorating floors and walls of churches and cathedrals.
An inlay is a technique of engraving various small motifs into hollowed-out spaces of wood to make a uniquely designed pattern on its surface. The craft has an origin history of 300 years. It is traced back to when Hoshiarpur was the centre of ivory bangle making.
Marquetry is a decorative technique where wood veneers are sawn into a pattern and then assembled like a jigsaw. Inlay is similar but instead of assembling a large panel of veneer, the decoration is inset into a recess cut into a larger panel of wood.
Many of these exquisite monuments were embellished with parchin kari, originally a Persian term, for marble inlay work. This is the art of delicately inlaying semi-precious gemstones into intricate designs carved into marble.
Clad metal inlays are created when a strip of one metal is bonded into a groove in another different metal or substrate. In this way, materials such as bronze, nickel, copper, carbon steel, precious metals and stainless steel inlay strips can be located precisely where they are needed in a base metal.
Inlay work begins with a design that is cut out on a brass sheet, which is then placed on marble and drawn. Next, the marble is carved out, using the most basic of tools - a set of chisels and a set-square. Slices of coloured stones(precious and semi-precious) are then delicately laid into the marble with adhesive.
What is a wood inlay and what does it do? A wood inlay is the addition of an often contrasting, colored material into a shape that's cut out to accept the inlay. It is fit flush with the item it's added to.
Inlay work in natural stones involves a process of hand cutting and shaping. To begin with, the design is planned such as floral or geometrical design and the same is cut out on a brass sheet. The cut brass sheet is placed on the base stone like marble, drawn and the base is delicately carved out.
