How long do Inlays/Onlays last? Inlays and onlays are regarded as a long-term solution for restoring your teeth. In general, they would be expected to last a similar number of years to crowns (around 10-15 years) and considerably longer than conventional fillings provided you have good oral hygiene.
Inlays are beneficial because they tend to strengthen teeth, are made of resin or porcelain to blend in with teeth, and are often more durable than traditional fillings. Gold or other metals can be used which are even stronger.
A dental inlay procedure is relatively simple and pain-free, however, there are some things that a patient should adhere to in order to have the best possible outcome from their procedure. Dental inlay procedures are done in order to restore certain areas of the tooth that may have been damaged due to decay or erosion.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
Most inlays are now made of porcelain, as the desire for a more natural looking tooth increases and the ability to bond these restorations to your tooth improves. Gold is a truly fantastic material and has been used successfully for many years.
At the minimum, one can expect to get about five years of use from a dental inlay. At most and with proper care, patients can get up to two decades from the inlay. These figures are only estimates; some people may have their dental restoration for a lifetime. On average, the inlay may last for 10 years.
The inlay/onlay requires a minimum of 1.5 mm occlusal space and all cuspidian angles must be rounded and the margins must have a shoulder shape with a rounded internal angle or a wide chamfer. The preparations should have a minimum ceramic thickness of approximately 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm.
With a filling, an amalgam or composite material is used to fill the space, and its a much quicker process, involving only a single visit. With an inlay, the space is filled with a single, solid piece that is usually fabricated in a lab and they are typically made out of a material like gold or ceramic.
