To cut out the inlay you remove the sleeve from the bushing and follow the template. The guide bushing has a removable sleeve that creates the correct offset for a 1/8-diameter router bit. We recommend using double-sided tape to secure the inlay blank to a backer board.
Rout Perfect Circles 01 of 09. Start with a center hole. 02 of 09. Mount the router. 03 of 09. Measure and mark the radius. 04 of 09. Attach the trammel. 05 of 09. Rout a shallow circle. 06 of 09. Back up for straight bits. 07 of 09. Cut away the excess. 08 of 09. Continue plunge-cutting.
Cutting a circle in wood with a hole saw. Using a hole saw is the absolute easiest way to cut circles in wood for your project. All you have to do is lock your hole saw in the chuck of your drill or drill press and start cutting. You can use hole saws to cut circles from inches up to 7 inches in diameter.
Start by lightly scoring the wood to get a groove going. Once the groove is established, you can cut further down with less risk of your knife slipping along the wood grain. Only cut into the wood just deep enough to fit the entire inlaid piece. If you end up slightly shallow, you can sand the inlaid piece down.
To cut a groove with a router, follow these steps: Set up the cut. Use a guide fence if needed. Adjust the bit so its cutting somewhere around 1/4-inch deep. Run the wood through the router to make the cut. Raise or lower the bit and repeat until youve cut a groove to the depth you want.
To put it simply, wood inlays are created by carving a void into the surface of a piece of wood, then filling that void with a piece of contrasting wood or other material cut to the same dimensions.
Routing the recess in the workpiece Step 1 - Set up router. Fit the guide bush to the router and slide the collar onto the spigot of the bush. Step 2 - Set cutting depth. Set the height of the cutter to match the thickness of the inlay material. Step 3 - Begin routing.
The easiest way to create inlays with a router is by using a guide bush with a guide bush alloy collar. This is a metal ring that fits around the spigot of a guide bush, allowing you to cut both the recesses and inserts needed when inlaying, using only one template.
