A plunge router works best, but if you dont have one, hold the router above the wood and start it. Carefully plunge it into the wood and begin moving it counterclockwise around the circle (Photo 2). Complete the circle, then readjust the depth and make another pass until you cut all the way through.
Bending wood for curved surfaces in furniture requires steam bending or laminating techniques. Steam bending involves exposing the wood to steam to soften it, making it pliable enough to bend into shape. Laminating involves gluing together thin layers of wood, known as veneers, over a form to create the desired curve.
To cut out the inlay you remove the sleeve from the bushing and follow the template. The guide bushing has a removable sleeve that creates the correct offset for a 1/8-diameter router bit. We recommend using double-sided tape to secure the inlay blank to a backer board.
Routing the recess in the workpiece Step 1 - Set up router. Fit the guide bush to the router and slide the collar onto the spigot of the bush. Step 2 - Set cutting depth. Set the height of the cutter to match the thickness of the inlay material. Step 3 - Begin routing.
How to Make Easy DIY Curvy Inlay Cutting Boards on a Bandsaw Tape blanks together. To get started, either find two boards of approximately the same size, or edge glue some boards to form your blanks. Draw your pattern. Cut to the line; well, sort of. Test fit. Glue and clamp. Plane or sand on both sides. Trim to length.
Cutting a groove in wood without a router can be done using alternative tools such as a table saw with a dado blade, a handheld circular saw with a straight edge guide, or even a chisel and mallet for smaller grooves.
Cutting a circle in wood with a hole saw. Using a hole saw is the absolute easiest way to cut circles in wood for your project. All you have to do is lock your hole saw in the chuck of your drill or drill press and start cutting. You can use hole saws to cut circles from inches up to 7 inches in diameter.
Band Saw / Jigsaw A band saw or jigsaw both work wonders when it comes to quickly cutting rough curves.
