An inlay is like a filling because it covers the decayed part of the tooth. The difference with inlays is that the inlay is formed in a dental lab as a hardened piece. Then, the dentist will place the dental inlay into the tooth and use resin or dental cement to bond it permanently to the tooth.
The Class II inlay involves the occlusal surface and one or more proximal surfaces of a posterior tooth. When cusp tips are restored, the term onlay is used. The procedure requires two appointments: the first for preparing the tooth and making an impression, and the second for delivering the restoration to the patient.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
The process of fabricating Inlays and Onlays Prepare the tooth to remove the damaged tooth substance. An impression of the preparation is taken and sent to the laboratory. Inlays/onlays will be fabricated on the impression using different materials like gold, laboratory composites, or ceramic.
Definition. Inlays-onlays are indirect dental restorations assembled by bonding to restore a loss of tooth substance. Classically, an inlay is described as an incrustation in the tooth without a cuspidian covering. The term onlay is used when the prosthetic part provides a cuspidian covering (Figure 1).
Inlays are usually indicated when there has been repeated bdocHub in the integrity of a direct filling as metal inlays are more superior in strength. It is also indicated when placement of direct restoration may be challenging to achieve satisfactory parameters (shape, margin, occlusion).
The primary distinction between an onlay and an inlay is that an onlay will cover a cusp of the tooth, whereas an inlay only fills the area between the cusps. The cavity is still drilled from the tooth, and an onlay is fabricated to the exact size and shape of the space.
Inlays are usually needed when the cavity inside the tooth is too large and too deep. Unlike a filling that uses a composite material to fill the space and only takes one visit, with an inlay, a solid piece of material (e.g. porcelain, ceramic, or gold) is made in a laboratory to precisely fit inside the empty space.
