Today, radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is everywhere. Its found in key fobs, your pets microchip, your tap-and-go credit card, and your cars electronic toll device. Its even found in places youd least expect.
RFID chips are integrated circuits (IC) inside RFID tags or labels. Despite their small size, they are highly-integrated microchips that contain all the components of a controller, memory and microprocessor. The chip operates by receiving energy via the waves the antenna emits.
RFID Inlays: RFID inlays are like RFID tags, but they are smaller and contain only the antenna and the chip. They are designed to be embedded into other objects, such as plastic cards, labels, or packaging materials. RFID inlays can be passive or active, and they can be read over shorter distances than RFID tags.
Wet inlays work best on cardboard and paper. For curved or rough surfaces, or those likely to be contaminated with dust or moisture, dry inlays are the better choice, because they allow users to apply an adhesive that will hold up better in such surfaces.
Every RFID system consists of three components: a scanning antenna, a transceiver and a transponder. When the scanning antenna and transceiver are combined, they are referred to as an RFID reader or interrogator. There are two types of RFID readers -- fixed readers and mobile readers.
ARC is a tag certification program [8] which ensures that RFID tags applied to pre-defined items meet or exceed the retailers performance requirements. ARC keeps a database of tags available on the market that pass certain ARC specs.
Depending on the frequency band they operate at we find different systems: low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF / NFC) and utra-high frequency (UHF). There are also two broad categories of systems: passive RFID and active RFID.
