Epithelial cell abnormalities This means that the cells lining the cervix or vagina show changes that might be cancer or a pre-cancer. This category is divided into several groups for squamous cells and glandular cells.
The patient should be supine, in dorsal lithotomy position to correctly perform a Pap smear (see the image below). The coccyx of the patient must be at the edge of the examination table to provide adequate visualization of the cervix once the speculum is inserted.
The Sims Position is described as in the person lying on the left side, left hip and lower extremity straight, and right hip and knee bent. It is also called lateral recumbent position. Sims position is also described as the person lying on the left side with both legs bent.
Try squatting with your legs wide open. Many people find this is the easiest position in which to access their cervix. Others prefer to sit or stand with one leg elevated on a table or other surface. If you need support, recruit a helper to steady you.
The test is done in your doctors office or clinic. Youll lie back on a table with your feet placed firmly in stirrups. Youll spread your legs, and your doctor will insert a metal or plastic tool called a speculum into your vagina. Theyll open it so that it widens the vaginal walls.
During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
