weamp;#39;re going to investigate the different background types in cassa using this survey Spectrum to illustrate the the basic forms so weamp;#39;ll start off with a a nun with a horizontal background if we then introduce a linear background you can see the characteristic straight line that goes from the start to the end of the energy interval no real structure here however if we introduce a Shirley background we then start to see some stru appearing within the background and these are the characteristic s shapes that youamp;#39;d see in a shirely background that sit beneath the Peaks um as you see here the titanium 2pit both Peaks have an S as two does the the oxygen 1s and if we introduce a twar background which is based on a universal cross-section we then obtain a background without these s shapes within the main part of the background and as you can see itamp;#39;s a much smoother background and this gives us an opportunity to to produce something which is more physically me

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is a technique for analyzing a materials surface chemistry. XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material.
Peak fitting of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data is the primary method for determining the identities and quantities of the chemical states of the atoms near the surface of a sample. Peak fitting is typically based on the minimization of a figure-of-merit, such as the residual standard deviation (RSD).
How XPS works. X-rays (photons) are shot onto a sample, and when electrons in the sample absorb enough energy, they are ejected from the sample with a certain kinetic energy. The energy of those ejected electrons is analyzed by a detector and a plot of these energies and relative numbers of electrons is produced.
Basic principles of XPS Why is this a surface technique? So the excited photoelectrons are relatively slow and mostly interact with the material they are generated and lose energy. A few electrons get out un-scattered and are detected as the photoelectron peaks. (mostly from the upper 10 nm of the material.)
How XPS Works. This technique uses an x-ray beam to excite the molecules on the surface of a sample, leading to a release of photoelectrons. By analyzing the energy of these photoelectrons, we can learn crucial elemental and chemical binding information about a materials surface.
Chemical shift arises in the initial state from the displacement of the electronic charge from the atom towards its ligands, reducing the electrostatic potential at the atom. There is a final state shift due to the polarization of the ligand by the core on the central atom.
XPS is based on the photoelectric effect, first discovered by Heinrich Hertz in 1887. He noticed that electrons were emitted from surfaces when irradiated with light. Albert Einstein more for- mally described the concept in 1905 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1921 for this work.
