The roots of Indian inlay furniture can be found in the ancient city of Agra, which flourished during the Mughal Empire. The Mughals, known for their love of luxury and art, introduced and nurtured the art of inlay, also known as pietra dura, in India.
The principal behind metal inlays is that wire or pieces of sheet are forced into cavities or hollowed out areas. These are cut so their walls slope inward, or are undercut. This insures that a piece of metal will get stuck there once it is forcibly rammed in.
Inlay jewelry has been practiced since ancient times, with early examples dating back to the early Egyptians and Greeks. Back then, inlay was primarily used for objects of high value, such as crowns, religious objects and burial goods.
The first inlay works are probably attributable to the first Egyptian dynasty, who lived around 3000 BC. They could create works of well-made inlay materials of various kinds and colors such as glass, ivory, obsidian, quartz, wood.
Inlay on metals The technique of metal in metal inlay was sophisticated and accomplished in ancient China as shown in examples of vessels decorated with precious metals, including this ding vessel (pictured) with gold and silver inlay from the Warring States period (403-221 BC).
For straight, end-mill inlays, especially in cutting boards, I will usually to 0.25.
