ACLs or Access Control Lists are the process by which ServiceNow provides granular security for its data and can be applied to individual records, as well as fields within those records. While you want to work with ACLs, you should know the types of ACLs.

* gives you a field level ACL which allows to Access to all field on that table. When you want to have table level ACL: Tablename. none gives you a row level ACL allows to access records.
A role is a collection of policies that your ACL administrator can link to a . They enable you to reuse policies by decoupling the policies from the distributed to team members.
An ACL specifies the permissions or restrictions for each user or group, based on their identity or other attributes, such as their IP address, device type, or location. A role is a granted position within an organization. The purpose of a role is to perform specific tasks or functions.
ACL is better suited for implementing security at the individual user level and for low-level data, while RBAC better serves a company-wide security system with an overseeing administrator. An ACL can, for example, grant write access to a specific file, but it cannot determine how a user might change the file.
Heres the basic difference between the two: For any share point or shared folder or file, POSIX permissions allow you to set permissions only for the Owner, one Group, and Others. ACLs give you the additional option to set permissions for multiple individuals and multiple groups for a shared item.
An ACL that allows you to write on any row level, and denies access on all field levels, will not allow access to the record, due to the AND statement between row level and field level. Only an ACL that allows you to write on any row level, allows you to write on any field level will allow write ability to the record.
