The container file is based on the ZIP format and defined in the Open Container Format (OCF). It is referred to in this description as an EPUB Container, but the term OCF ZIP Container is also used in the EPUB specifications.
ePUB ensures a smooth reading experience whether youre wrapped up with an eReader, hooked to your smartphone, or exploring the world through a tablet. With their . ePUB extension, ePUB files are a brilliant fusion of HTML, CSS, and media files, thoughtfully bundled together in a ZIP package.
The first file in the OCF ZIP Container MUST be the mimetype file. The contents of this file MUST be the MIME media type [ RFC2046 ] string application/epub+zip encoded in US-ASCII [ US-ASCII ].
An EPUB file is a group of files that conform to the OPS/OPF standards and are wrapped in a ZIP file. The OCF specifies how to organize these files in the ZIP, and defines two additional files that must be included.
