Metrics offer numerical data on system performance to analyze trends and monitor the systems current state. Traces record the flow of requests and transactions in a system to provide a comprehensive view of the systems components and overall behavior.
SpanID is the identifier passed along to ParentSpanID when creating a child span. If Span A with SpanIDA is the parent of Span B (whose spanID is SpanIDB), then the ParentSpanID for SpanB is SpanIDA. If Span Ys ParentSpanID is NULL/empty, then Span Y is a root span.
A trace is a collection of operations that represents a unique transaction handled by an application and its constituent services. A span represents a single operation within a trace. Splunk APM collects incoming spans into traces and analyzes them to give you full fidelity access to your application data.
Trace ID: The identifier of the end-to-end operation in which this particular overall operation took place. Span ID: The unique identifier for the span. If the same operation is invoked in the fulfillment of a single overall operation multiple times, then a trace might contain multiple spans with the same name.
Spans and traces In distributed tracing, a trace is a view into a request as it moves through a distributed system. A span is a named, timed operation that represents a part of the workflow. Multiple spans are pieced together to create a trace.
Distributed tracing allows you to see how a request progresses through different services and systems, the timing of each operation, any logs and errors as they occur.
TraceId and SpanId injection into logs configuration Add instrumented Log4j2 and OpenTelemetry-api libraries into the project dependencies: Maven projects. Update the log4j2. xml configuration file, typically stored in resources directory, with traceId , spanId , and sampled keys.
A trace represents the entire execution path of the request, and each span in the trace represents a single unit of work during that journey, such as an API call or database query. Whenever the request enters a service, a top-level child span is created.
