The most common side effects include bruising and swelling, which are typically temporary and resolve on their own. Uncommon side effects can include persistent lumps or the Tyndall effect. There are more severe side effects, which are extremely rare in experienced hands, such as infection and arterial injection.
While these treatments are generally safe when administered by a trained, licensed professional, theres a risk of complications, including infection, bruising, swelling, asymmetry, lumpiness, and an allergic reaction to the filler.
Finger pressure is applied to flatten the area of injection. A half-inch, 30-gauge needle is inserted through the skin at the most lateral extent of the tear trough, advancing fully and potentially indenting the skin with the hub for full docHub. The HA is then injected deep into the dermis as the needle is withdrawn.
The most common first step in treatment is the use of fillers. Fillers and tear trough management go hand-in-hand as these products work to reduce the hollowness of the trough. Fillers are ideal because they are quick and do not create any downtime for the individual.
Although rare, complications from dermal fillers can be devastating. The most serious complications are vascular. Vascular occlusions can lead to necrosis (tissue death), scarring and, even more seriously, blindness. Indeed, dermal fillers have already led to 98 reported cases of blindness (Beleznay et al, 2015).
Tear trough fillers are largely safe, though no cosmetic procedure is entirely without risk. In rare cases, its possible for under-eye fillers to cause blindness (this happens when a filler blocks the blood vessel that supplies blood to the eye).
Most patients find the cannula to be less painful than needles. Theres typically one needle stick per area, per side rather than multiple needle sticks. This allows for a much safer and comfortable treatment, especially for the under eye or tear trough, which is one of the prime uses for cannulas.
