Oklahoma uses three drugs for lethal injection: the sedative midazolam, the paralytic vecuronium bromide and potassium chloride, which ultimately stops the heart.
MIDAZOLAM: Seven states have used midazolam as the first drug in the three-drug protocol: Florida, Ohio, Oklahoma, Alabama, Virginia, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Oklahoma used midazolam in the botched execution of Clayton Lockett in April 2014, and Lockett died after the procedure was halted.
Harpe said the additional time between executions protects our teams mental health and allows time for them to process and recover between the scheduled executions. Oklahoma has executed 11 inmates since resuming lethal injections in October 2021 and has two more currently scheduled for later this year.
An injection (often and usually referred to as a shot in US English, a jab in UK English, or a jag in Scottish English and Scots) is the act of administering a liquid, especially a drug, into a persons body using a needle (usually a hypodermic needle) and a syringe.
Pentobarbital was introduced at the end of 2010 due to a shortage of sodium thiopental, and has since become the primary sedative in lethal injections in the United States. Barbiturates are the same class of drug used in medically assisted suicide.
If all goes as planned, the entire execution takes about five minutes, with death usually occurring less than two minutes after the final injection. However, botched lethal injections have sometimes required more than two hours to achieve death.
Descriptions. Sodium chloride 23.4% injection is used to replenish lost water and salt in your body due to certain conditions (eg, hyponatremia or low salt syndrome). It is also used as an additive for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and carbohydrate-containing IV fluids.
Lethal injection can cause prolonged pain and extremely painful deaths this is often obscured by elements of the process itself: for example, the second drug (a paralytic agent), the tight straps preventing a prisoner from moving, the white sheet hiding the body from view, or a curtain being drawn between witnesses
