Wash your hands well with soap and water. Dry them. Carefully find the spot where you will give the injection. Clean the skin at that spot with an alcohol wipe.
A safe injection does not harm the recipient or expose the healthcare provider to avoidable risks. Healthcare providers should never reuse a needle or syringe on more than one patient. Providers must discard both needles and syringes once used. Reusing the needle and/or syringe is unsafe and can spread disease.
Slightly pinch a fold of skin at the spot you chose. Pinch it between the fingers and thumb of one hand. Place the syringe at a 90-degree angle to the shot site. The needle should stand straight up from the skin.
The four most frequently used types of injection are: Intravenous (IV) injections. An IV injection is the fastest way to inject a medication and involves using a syringe to inject a medication directly into a vein. Intramuscular (IM) injections. Subcutaneous (SC) injections. Intradermal (ID) injections.
How to administer an intramuscular injection Wash your hands. Wash your hands with soap and warm water to prevent potential infection. Gather all the needed supplies. Locate the injection site. Clean the injection site. Prepare the syringe with medication. Self-inject with a syringe. Inject the medication. Remove the needle.
Adults: Inject approximately 1cm away from the belly button if using a 4mm or 5mm pen needle length. Children: Insert the needle 2 adult fingerbreadths away from the belly button, and avoid any protruding bones. If using a longer pen needle consult your healthcare professional.
Select a location on your belly that is at least 2 inches from your belly button. After you clean the skin, pinch an inch of skin and fatty tissue between your fingers. * Keeping your skin pinched, insert the needle into the skin. Press down on the plunger to inject the insulin into the pinched skin.
