If an IV is not in a vein, the fluids will collect in the surrounding tissue instead of the bloodstream.
As a result of normal physiological variation, some individuals may have small, thin, or hard-to-find veins, making it a challenge for even an experienced medical lab technician to draw blood. This can sometimes be a result of dehydration, which causes the body to constrict its blood vessels.
If you miss the vein, stick again with a fresh needle. Rotate injection sites. Scar tissue develops under injection sites and it is important to change the location and side of the injection. Use soap and water at the injection site.
Insert the needle into your vein with the needle bevel (opening) facing up, at a 15 to 35 degree angle, and always in the direction of the heart. The more perpendicular the needle is to the injection site, the greater chance you have of sticking the needle through the vein instead of into it.
If you miss a vein, you may feel some pain and swelling where youve injected. Missing the vein raises the risk of an infection. Get some medical advice if the area gets hot, painful, swollen, red or dark (depending on your skin colour).
If possible, you or a friend apply pressure to the site and try to elevate the wound if possible. Always seek medical help. Even a small arterial wound can drip for a long time.
An injection into a vein is called an intravenous injection (IV). You have the injection through a small tube (cannula) put into a vein in one of your arms.
If you miss your vein, reload a new syringe and try again in another site if possible. Dont use the same point to shoot over and over again.
