After application, wood stain dries to the touch within 10 to 12 hours and fully dries in 72 hours. Pressure-treated wood is commonly used for decking and fences and absorbs wood stain much like hardwood. After application, wood stain dries to the touch within four to eight hours and fully dries in 24 to 48 hours.
Wood can only absorb so much stain. Once the board has absorbed as much stain as it can, the stain will just sit on top of the wood and feel tacky even if you let it dry for days. You should wipe your excess stain off with a clean cloth when youre done applying.
Its due to the previous finishes and/or polishes, waxes, strippers, etcetera, which have soaked into the wood. It is rare for stripped woods to stain nicely. If you use gel stains or tinted topcoats (like the minwax polyshades) youll have better luck. You are stripping the old finish off right?
Rubbing or brushing against the direction of the grain will help fill deep pores with stain. Apply a liberal amount of stain, giving the wood an ample amount to absorb. Pay attention to how long you leave the stain on the wood before wiping off any unabsorbed liquid.
Apply oil-based stains with a paintbrush or clean rag. Apply water-based stains with a foam brush or synthetic bristle brush. For deep grain woods, work the stain into the grain by working in a circular motion. Otherwise, apply the stain evenly in the direction of the wood grain.
Stain is more permanent than paint in the sense that it seeps into the woods pores instead of sitting on top of the surface. While paint can be sanded off, stain is there to stay.
Mask off any areas you do not want stained, and stain one board or section at a time to eliminate lap marks. Then, follow up with a brush to ensure even coverage in particularly rough or knotty spots. Using a pump or airless sprayer, you can also apply most semi-transparent stains to rough-sawn wood.
Dip the cloth into the stain and apply it all over the wood using small movements. Wait for the stain to soak into the wood and then wipe off the excess with a clean cloth. If you want to achieve a darker colour, consider applying multiple coats. Finish off by applying a wood finish for long-lasting protection.
