hello and in this video we are going to learn how to format and sort xsn number in excel so i have a very simple ssn number here it is a typical s9 digit ssn number and what we really want to do is to reformat it so that it takes the following format so 316-17-8199 so basically we are splitting um we are re-formatting it so that it takes it is split into three parts three digit dash two digit dash four digits now many of you might be thinking oh no we would probably need to retype to manually type and then reformat it again but if you are working on a large excel file with lots and lots with like thousands or millions of ssa number uh manually formatting it could be quite messy and it will take a lot of time now of course there are several ways to do that we can use the concat or joint string on left or right and to to split it into several sections and then format it but if you are working on a very long uh document then it is going to take a lot of time so let me show you an easier a

To add dashes to SSNs using the REPLACE function in Excel, you can replace specific positions in the SSN string with dashes. For an SSN in cell A1, the formula =REPLACE(REPLACE(A1,6,0,-),4,0,-) inserts a dash after the third and fifth digits.

On the Home tab, next to Number in the Number Format box. , click the arrow, and then click More Number Formats. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Special. In the Type list, click Social Security Number.
