Incorrect administration of insulin (e.g., too little, too much, or at the wrong times) can result in both transient and serious hypo- and hyperglycemia, wide glycemic excursions, severe hypoglycemia, and DKA.
If you inject the insulin deeper into your muscle, your body will absorb it too quickly, it might not last as long, and the injection is usually more painful. This can lead to low blood glucose levels. People who take insulin daily should rotate their injection sites.
Insert needle into the upper-outer quadrant of the buttock (see image) using a quick dart like motion. The needle must be inserted completely leaving none of the needle exposed. Use slow, steady pressure on the plunger to inject all of the medication.
Where should insulin not be injected? A person should not inject into muscle. This is because an injection into the muscle can cause insulin to work too quickly. Therefore, it is important to inject into areas of skin with subcutaneous tissue, such as the abdomen and thighs.
Injection angle Insulin is usually injected under the skin (figure 3). It is important to use the correct injection angle since injecting too deeply could deliver insulin to the muscle, where it is absorbed too quickly. On the other hand, injections that are too shallow are more painful and not absorbed well.
Give all injections in the neck. Never inject into the top butt or top of the rump. Choosing the correct needle may also lessen injection site lesions. When administering SC injections, use a 16 or 18-gauge needle, to inch long.
The results suggest that in the thigh, accidental intramuscular injections will considerably increase the variability of insulin absorption and may impair glycemic control in insulin-dependent diabetic patients.
Intracardiac injection. The needle is inserted 1 cm to the left of the xiphoid process and aimed toward the left shoulder. The needle may also be inserted parasternally in the left fourth or fifth intercostal space (as denoted by the ).
