However, subcutaneous injections can cause abscesses and granulomas. Muscle is probably spared the harmful effects of substances injected into it because of its abundant blood supply.
Some people injecting SubQ develop ISRs (a red, sore and itchy bump lasting 3-7 days). ISRs usually happen if someone is injecting SubQ at too shallow of an angle and can be corrected by injecting at 90 instead.
The chances of injecting the medication into a blood vessel in subcutaneous fat are low but possible (Sepah, 2017). If this happens, you may notice blood in the syringe. This is generally not a cause for concern, but it can change how quickly medication takes effect in some cases.
Intramuscular injections are often given in the following areas: Deltoid muscle of the arm. The deltoid muscle is the site most typically used for vaccines. Vastus lateralis muscle of the thigh. Ventrogluteal muscle of the hip. Dorsogluteal muscles of the buttocks.
In some cases, an incorrectly administered intramuscular injection can cause severe damage. This is especially true if the needle penetrates a nerve or artery or injects the medication too quickly. Such complications can cause muscle damage, nerve damage, and even paralysis.
The best areas on your body to give yourself a SQ injection are: Upper arms. At least 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) below your shoulder and 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) above your elbow, on the side or back. Outer side of upper thighs.
If you inject the insulin deeper into your muscle, your body will absorb it too quickly, it might not last as long, and the injection is usually more painful. This can lead to low blood glucose levels. People who take insulin daily should rotate their injection sites.
In line with the sanitary concerns above, diagnoses of skin infections like Abscess and related to skin soft tissue infection (SSTI) are complications of sub-q injection mishandling that can lead to sepsis, amputation, muscle fibrosis, nerve damage or even death.
