Because the progesterone in oil is thicker than the water-based medications, some nurses order 18-gauge 1.5-inch needles to withdraw it from the vial. This needle can be intimidating due to its large size, but is only used to draw up the medication. You will use a 22-gauge 1- or 1.5-inch needle to do your injection.
The ideal needle gauge is usually determined by the kind of medication youre injecting. A lower (wider) gauge is usually needed when drawing up and delivering a relatively thick medication, such as testosterone cypionate. A higher (thinner) gauge is usually used for thinner medications, such as insulin.
A wide needle with a lower gauge is suitable for administering a high viscosity medication. A fine gauge or higher gauge needle, on the other hand, causes less pain and is better for low-viscosity medication. As mentioned, the site of the injection is the most important determinant of the needle length.
Syringes come in many sizes. Some are as small as 0.3 mL, and others are as large as 60 mL. Its important to try to pick the smallest syringe size that will hold your dose. Typically, IM and subcutaneous injections require a 0.3 mL to 3 mL syringe.
A 20 gauge needle is strong enough to administer subcutaneous and intramuscular injections alike. Along with 16 and 18 gauge needles, the 20g is also the size of choice for epidural injections to block pain. Another use for the 20 gauge is extraction of tissue for biopsy.
Remember to use an 18-23 G with 1-1.5 inch needle to draw up the steroid into the syringe then switch the tip to an 21-25 G with 1-1.5 inch needle to inject the steroid into the muscle.
90/14 is typically regarded as a medium-weight needle, so you can start there for reference. If you are sewing with something lighter, like sheer cotton, youll want a smaller needle, like an 80/12 or 75/11. And if you are sewing with something heavier, like denim, youll want a larger needle like a 100/16 or 110/18.
The gauge of a needle is a measure of its diameter: the larger the gauge number, the smaller the needle diameter. Therefore, a 18-gauge needle is smaller in diameter than a 16-gauge one [5].
