Syringes come in many sizes. Some are as small as 0.3 mL, and others are as large as 60 mL. Its important to try to pick the smallest syringe size that will hold your dose. Typically, IM and subcutaneous injections require a 0.3 mL to 3 mL syringe.
Because the progesterone in oil is thicker than the water-based medications, some nurses order 18-gauge 1.5-inch needles to withdraw it from the vial. This needle can be intimidating due to its large size, but is only used to draw up the medication. You will use a 22-gauge 1- or 1.5-inch needle to do your injection.
Needle for SubQ injections are usually 23-25 Gauge and 5/8 (inch) in length. Medication should never be drawn up through these needles. Use a separate drawing up needle. Find a comfortable, well lit working place and inject at the same time of day each time you do your injection.
