Most of the time, medical professionals rely on 20-gauge IVs for general infusions. They also resort to them to transfer blood if 18-gauge needles arent available or when treating patients that have relatively small veins.
Intramuscular (IM) injections The deltoid muscle is most often used as the site for IM injections in adults. Needle length is usually 11, 2225 gauge, but a longer or shorter needle may be needed depending on the patients weight. Note: An alternate site for IM injection in adults is the anterolateral thigh muscle.
Intradermal injections (ID) are administered into the dermis just below the epidermis. Use a tuberculin syringe, calibrated in tenths and hundredths of a milliliter, with a needle length of 1/4 inches to 1/2 inches and a gauge of 25 27 Page 2 ID injections may be given on the inner aspect of the forearm.
The 23-gauge, 1-inch and 25-gauge, 1-inch needles are standard for testosterone injections. The smaller-gauge needle (higher number) will reduce tissue scarring after years of TRT.
Needle Gauge Chart Gauge NumberNeedle Nominal O.D. (mm)Needle Dead Volume (L/25.4 mm) 25 gauge needle 0.515 1.349 L/25.4 mm 24 gauge needle 0.566 1.93 L/25.4 mm 23s gauge needle 0.642 0.268 L/25.4 mm 23 gauge needle 0.642 2.266 L/25.4 mm26 more rows
Patients use the 27 gauge needle for administering shots of insulin or other prescription medications at home. It is one of the most popular gauges for vaccinations and delivery of intravenous medications.
Common gauge sizes range from 18 to 24, with 18 being the largest diameter and 24 being the smallest. For needle length, higher numbers indicate bigger lengths. For example, our infusion set with 21G 0.8x38mm and infusion set with 18G 0.8*38mm is commonly used.
Intramuscular injections are administered at a 90-degree angle to the skin, preferably into the anterolateral aspect of the thigh or the deltoid muscle of the upper arm, depending on the age of the patient (Table 6-2). The needle gauge for intramuscular injection is 22-25 gauge.
