Large subcutaneous injection volumes are associated with pain. In this sense, the maximum volume generally accepted is around 1.5 ml, although volumes of up to 3 ml are well tolerated when injected in the abdomen.
The subcutaneous route is normally limited to an injection volume of 1 mL. Safety considerations allows for self-medication by the patient. This route can also be used for microparticle or implant depot injections.
Subcutaneous injections are usually aqueous solutions or suspensions administered in small volumes of 2mL or less. They are generally given in the forearm, upper arm, thigh, or abdomen. The site should be rotated if frequent injections are to be given, to reduce tissue irritation.
Syringes come in many sizes. Some are as small as 0.3 mL, and others are as large as 60 mL. Its important to try to pick the smallest syringe size that will hold your dose. Typically, IM and subcutaneous injections require a 0.3 mL to 3 mL syringe.
It is currently believed that the maximum volume for SC injections is approximately 1.5 mL. Larger SC injection volumes are considered to be associated with injection pain and adverse events at the injection site.
The dorsogluteal is not the preferred site due to its proximity to the sciatic nerve and major blood vessels. If landmarked correctly however, it is safe to use. Up to 4mls can be injected into this site.
Subcutaneous (Subcut) injections Inject at a 45-degree angle into fatty tissue overlying the triceps muscle a 5/8 needle, 2325 gauge is recommended.
The recommended maximum volume for single injection is 1.5mLs, larger volumes can be associated with pain in this area.
