The 2-needle technique starts with the physician anesthetizing the area with a small, 25-gauge needle and waiting 3-5 minutes for the anesthesia to take full effect; a larger-bore needle (21-22 gauge) is then used for the corticosteroid injection.
Longer needles ( inch or longer) are commonly used for intramuscular injections, while shorter (shorter than inch) needles are more often used for intravenous injections. Different sized needles are used for different purposes.
Measurements on syringes: Milliliters (mL) for liquid volume. Cubic centimeters (cc) for the volume of solids.
Syringes come in many sizes. Some are as small as 0.3 mL, and others are as large as 60 mL. Its important to try to pick the smallest syringe size that will hold your dose. Typically, IM and subcutaneous injections require a 0.3 mL to 3 mL syringe.
Needle length is usually 11, 2225 gauge, but a longer or shorter needle may be needed depending on the patients weight. Note: An alternate site for IM injection in adults is the anterolateral thigh muscle.
Most adolescents and adults will require a 1- to 1.5-inch (2538 mm) needle to ensure intramuscular administration.
Subcutaneous (Subcut) injection Use a 2325 gauge, 5/8 needle. Inject in fatty tissue over triceps.
